 Chinese company polluting water supply in FCT were not granted mining lease - FCT Minister


Minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), Mohammed Bello has disclosed that the Chinese mining company operating in the nation’s capital has no lease to mine gold. 

 

In a meeting with the minister of water resources Suleiman Adamu on Tuesday August 18, Bello who confirmed that Hongao Mining Company Limited acted against Nigeria’s mining policy also disclosed that they polluted the only water source for at least six communities in Karshi area of the FCT. 

 

A physio-chemical analysis carried out on the stream by the FCT water board revealed that the water had high levels of turbidity, nitrate and iron and may need further treatment. 

 

In a statement released by spokesman of the ministry of water resources Kenechukwu Offie, Bello was quoted as saying: 


 “The company undertaking the mining activities in Kutasa Community was not granted a lease to mine gold in that Community”.


Adamu further gathered that he has directed officials from Nigeria's Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) to investigate the matter. 

 

The statement added: 

“The outcome of the investigation revealed that ‘Gold’ mining activities were taking place in that community. 

“Engr. Adamu said that the report from Nigeria's Integrated Water Resources Management Commission indicated ‘a red flag’ to us that must not be allowed to fly further.

“Engr. Adamu, therefore, reiterated that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources will not allow the experience of Niger State, where people died of lead poisoning, to repeat itself in FCT.

“The FCT Minister corroborated the Hon. Minister of Water Resources’s position that their various reports would need to be harmonised into a working document before they take up the matter with the Minister of Mines and Steel Development.”

Police arrest men for violating COVID-19 curfew, then lock him up in a crowded cell

Taking to social media, some Nigerian man in Lagos state, lamented about their experience at the police cell. According to them, they were arrested for flouting the 10pm curfew put in place by the Federal government to curb the spread of  COVID-19  in the state. According to the men, there was heavy traffic in Lagos on Wednesday, so they couldn’t beat the curfew hour. The police officers enforcing the traffic in Ikeja arrested them and threw them in a crowded cell where none of the COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing was observed. Twitter user, Osinaike Joseph, who shared videos from the cell, alleged that the police officers refused to release some of them who were visibly sick. They accused the police of demanding bribe from them before their release.   Veteran Yoruba actress Grace Oyin-Adejobi, popularly known as Iya Osogbo, will officially retire from acting when she clocks 90 on Sunday, August 23. Iya Osogbo is the widow of the late Yoruba actor Oyin Adejobi who died in 2000. Court orders arrest of former NASS Clerk, Sani Omolori

A federal high court in Abuja has issued a warrant for the arrest of the immediate past Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Omolori.   This is coming after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed an application before the court, alleging that the respondent had ignored its invitation for him to report to its office following a petition filed against him.    The anti-graft agency which said it is investigating the diversion of 14 Toyota Hilux vehicles and 13 Peugeot 508 valued at over N400 million, disclosed that it has invited the Secretary of the National Assembly Commission, Adamu Fika, Mr Oluseye Ajakaye and others to its office.   The EFCC noted that the invitees made revelations indicting Mr Omolori who refused to honor its invitation on two occassions.    Justice Suleman Belgore who listened to EFCC's counsel S.N. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM, has appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC to pay the allowances, tuition, and other incentives of students on its scholarship scheme in the United Kingdom as most of them have turned to beggars on the streets of the UK.   During the recent National Assembly probe of the NDDC, it was revealed that Nigerian students awarded scholarships to some universities in the United Kingdom, have been abandoned by the commission as they have not received a dime in allowance or school fees from the commission.
