[COVID-19] Just in: Secondary schools in Nigeria to reopen August 4

This was made known in a statement issued on Monday by the director of press and public relations, ministry of education, Mr Ben Bem Goong. The unanimous decisions reached was reached at a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Honourable Commissioners of Education of the 36 states.

The statement revealed that, “Only students in exit classes are expected to resume, so that they can participate in the West African Examination (WAEC) exercise scheduled to begin on August 17, 2020”.

“Secondary schools in the country are to reopen as from the 4th of August, 2020 for exit classes only. Students will have two weeks within which to prepare for the West African Examinations (WAEC) due to start on the 17th of August, 2020,” the statement read. 
“These were the unanimous decisions reached today at a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Honourable Commissioners of Education of the 36 states, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), the proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.
“It was agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from the 4th of August, 2020 to enable them to prepare for the WAEC examinations scheduled to commence from the 17th of August, 2020. 

“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and public-spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparations for safe reopening, as agreed.”

Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday “between the federal ministry of education and chief executives of examination bodies namely, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS to harmonise their examination dates, which will be conveyed to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education”.

NJC recommends 22 judges to Buhari for appointment to Supreme Court and others

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands. Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public,  TheCable  learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters. The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC. Woman robbed of her baby and thrown into septic tank is rescued after three days

  A woman has been rescued from a septic tank three days after a man who stole her baby from her threw her in there.   The nursing mother, named Mrs Chizoba Eke was pulled alive but injured from the septic tank of an incomplete building located in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.   Her attacker, simply identified as Chinedu was apprehended when he tried to traffic her six months old baby through Omerelu, Rivers border with Imo State.   Mrs Eke, the nursing mother was kidnapped from her home with her baby on August 17, 2020, and forced into a septic tank after a severe assault by her abductor.   The husband of the victim, Mr Eke, also alleged that Chinedu had attempted to rape his wife when she was pregnant with the newborn.   Mr Eke said, “I was invited by the police to come and identify our baby, having lodged a complaint when both my wife and baby went missing. A former Kaduna Central district Senator, Shehu Sani has strongly condemned the killing of aid workers by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. DAILY POST reported that the aid workers were kidnapped by Boko Haram Terrorists on June 20th and were executed on Wednesday. In a video released by the armed group while executing the humanitarian workers, the terrorists said they executed the abducted aid workers living in their custody for a month in Borno state, having exhausted the days given for the ransom. Reacting, Shehu Sani described the execution as ‘sad and tragic.’ He, therefore, called for the protection of all aid workers in the country. “The execution of the five aid workers by the insurgents is sad and tragic.
