U.S government advises citizens against travelling to Nigeria

The United States government has advised its citizens against travelling to Nigeria for security reasons.

 

In a report published on the website of its Department of State and Bureau of Consular Affairs, Americans were warned against travelling to Borno, Yobe and the northern part of Adamawa State due to terrorism.

 

Americans were also advised against travelling to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano and Yobe states due to kidnappings.

 

The consulate listed coastal areas of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Delta, and Rivers states with the exception of Port Harcourt as areas prone to maritime crime, civil unrest, kidnapping and other crimes. 

 

The consulate further said that Nigeria is known for violent crimes such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping and rape. It read:

“Exercise extreme caution throughout the country due to the threat of indiscriminate violence.

“Terrorists continue plotting and carrying out attacks in Nigeria, especially in the Northeast. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting shopping centres, malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars, schools, government installations, transportation hubs, and other places where crowds gather.

“Sporadic violence occurs between communities of farmers and herders in rural areas.”


Americans were also told that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services in many areas of Nigeria due to security conditions.

Two confirmed dead and many properties razed as gas explosion rocks Ajao estate in Lagos (photos/video)

Two persons have been confirmed dead in a gas explosion that rocked Afariogun Street in the Ajao area of Lagos State this evening Tuesday, July 28.   The explosion started from a shop used in refilling gas cylinders. Nine shops were razed in the explosion and a number of cars were also burnt.   According to reports, the accident happened after a 62-year-old woman, who runs a cooking gas shop and her 32-year-old daughter were called back to their shop to attend to a “regular customer” who came to fill a gas cylinder. The woman returned and successfully attended to the customer. However, the sad incident happened when the customer tried putting the gas cylinder into a waiting tricycle, it fell and exploded.   The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said the fire had been extinguished and that the bodies of the deceased persons have been evacuated from the scen...
