 Female Iraqi activist shot dead in Basra


Riham Yaqoob, a female Iraqi activist and doctor who led local anti-government protests, was shot dead in the Iraqi city of Basra on Wednesday, August 19. 

 

Following the murder of Yaqoob, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi dismissed Basra's chief of police and other security officials. He also vowed to "do everything necessary for the security forces to undertake their duties".

 

Mustafa al-Kadhimi said;


"Complicity with the killers and submitting to their threats is rejected and we will do everything necessary for the ministry of interior and security agencies to carry out the task of protecting the security of society from the threats of outlaws."

This is coming barely 5 months after Kadhimi, a former intelligence chief, was sworn-in following the resignation of his predecessor over mass protests in the capital Baghdad, Basra and other southern cities.

 

There have been continuous protests in Iraq due to endemic corruption, high unemployment, dire public services and foreign interference.

Magu Probe: Olukoyede, EFCC Secretary, Suspended

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands. Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public,  TheCable  learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters. The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC. Magu was arrested on July 6 and whisked to the presidential villa in Abuja, where he appeared before a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the operations of the EFCC under him. The panel is headed by Ayo Salami, retired president of the appeal court. On July 14, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), sent a letter to Mohammed Umar, acting EFCC chairman, notifying him of the suspension of 12 directors in the commission. Demitra “Mimi” Roche, who appeared on the Oxygen reality show “Bad Girls Club,” has passed away at the age of 34. Record producer and founder of Valholla Entertainment in Miami, where Roche had worked as vice president of A&R since 2011, announced her death via Twitter. “I’m at a loss for words. Contract splitting is rampant in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Niger Delta Affairs Minister Godswill Akpabio, said on Monday. According to him, the management of the agency indulges in splitting contracts to outwit the minister and evade approval. Speaking before the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta in Abuja, the minister alleged that the agency spent “over N4.2 billion in a day in tranches of N49 million.” The committee is probing how N40 billion was spent by the Interim Management Committee (IMC). Akpabio was invited with the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei. Pondei fainted during the proceedings and had to be revived and taken to the hospital.
