Orji Uzor Kalu receives rousing welcome in Abia as he returns home months after he was released from prison (photos)

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu received a rousing welcome when he returned to Abia state on Monday, July 27, months after he was released from prison.   Recall that in December 2019, the former Abia state governor was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was convicted for N7.1bn fraud alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance during his tenure, Ugo Udeogu. The Supreme court on May 8, 2020, then nullified Kalu and Udeogo's conviction on grounds that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, lacked the jurisdiction to have presided over their case. He was released from Kuje prison on June 3, 2020.   On Monday, July 27, he made a triumphant return to the state and was received by his teeming supporters. See more photos below

Residents of Olaogun in Ifo Ibogun area of Ogun State were shocked on Tuesday when former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, stormed the area with a truckload of armed security operatives and allegedly physically assaulted the wife of his close relative and top confidant, Adebayo Molaja, according to Sahara reporters. It was gathered that Obasanjo personally flogged Mrs Adebayo several times with a horse whip (Koboko) for an alleged ‘theft’ of N160m. It was not clear how the issue came about and what actually prompted the former President, who is also a retired military general, to take such action. Nigerian embassy in Canada closed to the public after its staff was attacked

  The Nigerian embassy in Canada has been shut down following an attack launched against its staff.    The comission in a statement shared on its official website, said it had devised a system in which citizens with emergency cases were attended to strictly by appointment that allowed a limited number of people into the chancery at a time, in compliance with the laid-down rules of physical distancing.   Recounting how a female staff member was allegedly held hostage and subjected to physical abuse, the commission accused citizens of showing up without an appointment, acting in an unruly manner and disturbing the peace at the chancery.   The statement read;  THE HIGH COMMISSION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA IN CANADA WISHES TO INFORM NIGERIAN COMMUNITIES IN CANADA AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THAT THE MISSION REMAINS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. Two airplanes collide at Lagos airport

A wing tip accident was witnessed at the cargo area of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Wednesday July 29.    The accident occurred when a Middle East Airlines plane was coming to park on the apron while a Turkish Airlines aircraft was taxiing out.   Passengers on the Turkish Airlines flight were made to disembark and it was further learnt that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) have been notified and would issue a statement on the incident.

Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs through the National Council for Moon Sighting has called Muslims in the country to watch out for the new crescent of Zul-Hijjah from Tuesday, the 21st of July, 2020. The call was made in a statement titled: ‘Crescent sighting reminder for Zul-Hijjah 1441AH’ issued on Monday by Usman Al-Nafaty on behalf of the Council. “Crescent sighting reminder for Zul-Hijjah 1441H. “Coming Tuesday, tomorrow is 29th of DHUL-QA’DAH 1441H (21st July 2020) hence, the first day to look for Zul-Hijjah 1441H crescent. “The time of conjunction (i.e. crescent birth or astronomical new moon) is Monday evening, 20th July 2020) at 6:33 pm. “Please kindly endeavor to look for the crescent on that day or ask someone to do so on your behalf and kindly share the results”, the statement read.

  The Jigawa state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to boycott the 2020 Annual General Meeting of the bar if the decision to withdraw the invitation of Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufai, is not reversed.   The NBA on Thursday, August 20, announced the withdrawal of Governor el-Rufai's invitation, following a protest by some lawyers who argued that the governor is well known for 'human rights abuse,' and therefore shouldn't be invited to their meeting.   In a statement released, the chairman of NBA in Jigawa state, Abubakar Garba, argued that the governor has not been given a fair hearing to defend himself from the allegations of human rights abuses some members of the profession leveled against him.
