Magu ordered my arrest after I demanded my N763m legal fee - Former EFCC lawyer alleges

A former prosecutor who worked with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), has revealed that the suspended acting Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, ordered his arrest after he asked to be paid a sum of N763.9m in legal fees.

 

Chief Obla reportedly made the revelation while reading out an 18-page letter to the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel investigating Magu.


According to Obla, Magu threatened to make bribery allegations against him when he demanded for his payment.

 

In the 18 page letter titled, ‘Presentation In Respect of Malicious and Reckless Abuse of State Power of Investigation and Prosecution Resulting in Mismanagement of Forfeited Assets by Deliberate and Contrived Incompetence and Suspicious Dealing of Forfeited Assets.’, Obla said he helped the commission recover hundreds of billions of naira in cash and assets and prosecuted about 40 cases for the EFCC including bank chiefs that were sacked.

While testifying in front of Magu at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Chief Obla said,
 “As of date, the EFCC owes me an outstanding balance of N685, 389, 928.10 and $202,460.47 (N78.5m) or its naira equivalent at the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria exchange rate, together with interest at prime lending rate, being professional fees for the prosecution of over 40 high profile cases. See Statement of Claim in Suit No: FCT/CV/3220/17 BETWEEN Obla v. EFCC.”

“In effect, Ibrahim Magu deliberately and maliciously denied me the fruits of my services for EFCC whilst putting me to great expense to defend a worthless charge,” the lawyer said.

 

On 7 July 2020, Magu was suspended as the chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because of corruption allegations leveled against him by the Attorney General's office.

Lebanon blast was caused by welder as death toll passes 100

It has been claimed that the huge explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed over 100 people and injured more than 4,000, was caused by a welder at work.   Close to where the welder was working, there was "highly explosive sodium nitrate" confiscated from a ship by Lebanese authorities and placed in one of the warehouses located near the harbour. Former Broadway actress, Royana Black dies at 47 after battling Leukemia

Hollywood actress, Royana Black, who starred in Broadway's Brighton Beach Memoirs, has died. She was aged 47.   Black died in Los Angeles on July 14 following a battle with Leukemia, her family have revealed in her obituary announced Tuesday, July 28.   According to a GoFundMe campaign set up for her memorial, Black had acute myeloid leukemia, and her death came "very suddenly".  "Royana's incredible energy and spirit will be a part of our lives forever, and her friends and family want to remember her and assist her husband, JP, at this most difficult time," the statement on the GoFundme page read. A lecturer at the University of Benin in Edo State, Dr Stella Okotie, was on Monday night crushed to death at the university’s main gate. It was gathered that the accident happened when policemen attached to Ugbowo Division were pursuing a commercial bus in a bid to extort some money from the driver. This led to a physical struggle between the driver and the policemen for the wheels. Egypt court sentences five young women to prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok

An Egyptian court has sentenced five young women to two years in prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok.     The prosecution statement named two of the defendants 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada Eladhm and said the other three helped run their social media accounts.   The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (A$26,000) each for "violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family," inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor.   Haneen Hossam and Mawada Eladhm rose to fame though TikTok, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets which include sharing of footage of themselves wearing makeup, posing in cars, dancing in kitchens and making funny skits.   However, their social media stardom became their undoing in a country, where citizens can land in prison for vague crimes such as “misusing social media,” “disseminati...
