Magu ordered my arrest after I demanded my N763m legal fee - Former EFCC lawyer alleges

A former prosecutor who worked with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), has revealed that the suspended acting Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, ordered his arrest after he asked to be paid a sum of N763.9m in legal fees.

 

Chief Obla reportedly made the revelation while reading out an 18-page letter to the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel investigating Magu.


According to Obla, Magu threatened to make bribery allegations against him when he demanded for his payment.

 

In the 18 page letter titled, ‘Presentation In Respect of Malicious and Reckless Abuse of State Power of Investigation and Prosecution Resulting in Mismanagement of Forfeited Assets by Deliberate and Contrived Incompetence and Suspicious Dealing of Forfeited Assets.’, Obla said he helped the commission recover hundreds of billions of naira in cash and assets and prosecuted about 40 cases for the EFCC including bank chiefs that were sacked.

While testifying in front of Magu at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Chief Obla said,
 “As of date, the EFCC owes me an outstanding balance of N685, 389, 928.10 and $202,460.47 (N78.5m) or its naira equivalent at the prevailing Central Bank of Nigeria exchange rate, together with interest at prime lending rate, being professional fees for the prosecution of over 40 high profile cases. See Statement of Claim in Suit No: FCT/CV/3220/17 BETWEEN Obla v. EFCC.”

“In effect, Ibrahim Magu deliberately and maliciously denied me the fruits of my services for EFCC whilst putting me to great expense to defend a worthless charge,” the lawyer said.

 

On 7 July 2020, Magu was suspended as the chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because of corruption allegations leveled against him by the Attorney General's office.

Donald Trump says he will pardon someone ‘very, very important’ today

  US President, Donald Trump has said he will pardon someone who is “very, very important” on Tuesday, August 18.   Trump made the announcement on Monday night, August 17, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One.   Nigerians have reacted to President Buhari's media aide, Bashir Ahmad's tweet which surfaced in the wake of the death penalty handed out to a Kano singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu who was found guilty of committing blasphemy for a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March 2020.    Bashir Ahmad had in the tweet shared in 2015, supported the death penalty for blasphemy which he described as his "belief".    The tweet read;  I cant pretend or keep silent. Police arrest former dispatch riders for attempting to snatch vehicle from an Uber driver

Two former dispatch riders identified as Sule Abdulkareem and Celestine Joseph have been arrested by the Lagos state police for attempting to dispossess an Uber driver of his vehicle in Anthony Village area of the state.    They were arrested by SARS operatives at Anthony-Oke area of the state, while looking for a more deserted part of the area to launch an attack on the driver.   The two suspects who both confessed to attempting to rob the driver, claimed they had wanted to use the vehicle as collateral for a loan to start up a business. No life lost as boat with 10 passengers capsizes in Lagos (photos)

No life was lost after a boat capsized at Marine Police Head-quarter, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi on Tuesday night July 28.   According to a statement released this morning by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, The boat capsized while en route Ikoyi from Ilashe after it t collided with an unidentified substance. A total of 10 persons(9 Adult males and a female) were involved in the incident and were rescued alive by the Marine Police in conjunction with LASEMA Response Team as no life was lost. The names of the victims are as follows Ogungbe Taiwo(Captain of the Boat) Ernest Abode Anjadick Emmanuel Isah Obima Ewere Mashack Bulus Oyefeso Oluwamayo Owoyemi Taiwo Peter Aina Oluwasanmi Lawal Gbolahan and Chinasa Temitope(female) The second boat was recovered from the water ten minutes after the first one which had 7 victims on board and the total number of victims rescued now 17 in number ( 16 Males and 1 female).
