“We Are Not Leaving” – Shoprite Debunks Brewing Exit Rumour

ShopRite Nigeria has debunked the story making the rounds that it intends to close shop in Nigeria.

In a telephone conversation with Vanguard, the Country Director for Chastex Consult, Ini Archibong, said

“Shoprite is not leaving Nigeria. “We have only just opened to Nigerian investors which we have also been talking to just before now.

We are not leaving, who leaves over a $30billion investment and close shop? It doesn’t sound right.

“We only just given this opportunity to Nigeria investors to come in and also help drive our expansion plan in Nigeria. So we are not leaving.

“I have tried to say this as too many people as I can. There should be no panic at all and all of that. There is no truth in that report.”


Recall that reports have been circulating that the retail outlet has started a formal process to consider the potential sale of all or a majority of stake in its supermarkets in Nigeria.

The report said the retailer had struggled in the Nigeria market after some South African owned retailer shops exited the Nigeria market.

The report further stated that Shoprite results for the year do not reflect any of their operations in Nigeria as it will be classified as a discontinued operation.

The report also said international markets excluding Nigeria contributed 11.6 per cent to the group sales and reported 1.4 per cent decline in sales from 2018.

South African operations contributed 78 per cent of the overall sales and saw 8.7 per cent rise for the years. The report went further to say that as a result of the lockdown, customers’ visits declined 7.4 per cent but the average basket spends increased by 18.4 per cent

Mother drowns after jumping into sea to save her son and his friend

A mother drowned in front of her son and his friend after she jumped into the sea to save them.   The woman, who is in her 30s and has been named locally as Danni, went to the boys' rescue when they got into difficulty in a kayak yesterday, August 9.   The body of the woman was later pulled lifeless from the water after being caught out by the strong current at Waxham beach in the Norfolk United Kingdom.   Horrified onlookers tried in vain to resuscitate her before paramedics took over, but she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.   The sad incident happened at about 5.30pm on Sunday, while the beach was packed with people.   The beach and nearby Sea Palling are notorious for having dangerous riptides which can sweep away unsuspecting swimmers.   Emergency services including Coastguard teams, ambulances, local paramedics and a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene after HM Coastguard received "multiple calls" about several people in ...

Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Dogara’s defection was disclosed to Channels Television by the acting Chairman of APC, Mai Mala Buni. Buni and Dogara were said to have met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa. A hardhat died and at least three other people were hurt in a chain-reaction accident Thursday at a Manhattan building undergoing facade repair work, authorities said. 7 members of a family die of food poisoning in Zamfara, husband runs mad

  A food poisoning incident at  Auki village of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State has left 7 members of the same family, consisting of five children and two housewives, dead.    It was further learnt that the husband of the late woman, Mallam Hassan lawali also developed a psychiatric disorder after eating food prepared with corn on Tuesday night.    An eyewitness told Nigerian Tribune; “After they ate the food, they started to develop stomach pains, three died instantly while four people were taken to General Hospital, Bungudu where they were also pronounced dead”. While the Doctor on duty confirmed that the members of the family died of food poisoning, it was also gathered that Mallam Hassan could neither speak nor eat.

Egypt court sentences five young women to prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok

An Egyptian court has sentenced five young women to two years in prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok.     The prosecution statement named two of the defendants 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada Eladhm and said the other three helped run their social media accounts.   The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (A$26,000) each for "violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family," inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor.   Haneen Hossam and Mawada Eladhm rose to fame though TikTok, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets which include sharing of footage of themselves wearing makeup, posing in cars, dancing in kitchens and making funny skits.   However, their social media stardom became their undoing in a country, where citizens can land in prison for vague crimes such as “misusing social media,” “disseminati...
