School feeding programme gulped over N500m during lockdown - Minister of humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Farouq claims

Sadiya Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (MHADMSD) has disclosed that the federal government spent about N523.3 million on school feeding programme during the lockdown against the Coronavirus pandemic.

 

The Minister disclosed this at the Presidential Taskforce briefing on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja.

 

Sadiya who disclosed that the programme was modified and implemented in three states following a March 29 Presidential directive, added that each take home ration was valued at N4,200 and this was arrived at with proper consultation. The EFCC, CCB, ICPC, DSS and some NGOs were reportedly invited to monitor the process.

 

She said; 


"It is critical at this juncture to provide details that will help puncture the tissue of lies being peddled in the public space.

"The provision of 'Take Home Rations', under the modified Home Grown School Feeding programme, was not a sole initiative of the MHADMSD.

"The ministry, in obeying the presidential directive, went into consultations with state governments through the state Governor's Forum, following which it was resolved that 'take-home rations remained the most viable option for feeding children during the lockdown.

"So, it was a joint resolution of the ministry and the state governments to give out take-home rations.

"The stakeholders also resolved that we would start with the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states, as pilot cases. 

"According to statistics from the NBS and CBN, a typical household in Nigeria has 5.6 to six members in its household, with three to four dependents.

"So, each household is assumed to have three children.

"Based on the original design of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, long before it was domiciled in the ministry, every child on the programme receives a meal a day.

"The meal costs N70 per child. When you take 20 school days per month, it means a child eats food worth N1,400 per month.

"Three children would then eat food worth N4,200 per month, and that was how we arrived at the cost of the 'take-home ration'.

"The agreement was that the federal government would provide the funding while the states would implement it.

"To ensure transparency in the process, we partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) as technical partners.

"TrackaNG monitored and gave daily updates validating the programme.

"In the FCT, 29,609 households were impacted, 37,589 homes in Lagos and 60,391 in Ogun, making a total of 124,589 families affected between May 14, and July 6.

"If 124,589 households received take-home rations valued at N4,200, the amount will be N523,273,800."

Woman robbed of her baby and thrown into septic tank is rescued after three days

  A woman has been rescued from a septic tank three days after a man who stole her baby from her threw her in there.   The nursing mother, named Mrs Chizoba Eke was pulled alive but injured from the septic tank of an incomplete building located in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.   Her attacker, simply identified as Chinedu was apprehended when he tried to traffic her six months old baby through Omerelu, Rivers border with Imo State.   Mrs Eke, the nursing mother was kidnapped from her home with her baby on August 17, 2020, and forced into a septic tank after a severe assault by her abductor.   The husband of the victim, Mr Eke, also alleged that Chinedu had attempted to rape his wife when she was pregnant with the newborn.   Mr Eke said, “I was invited by the police to come and identify our baby, having lodged a complaint when both my wife and baby went missing. Lady arrested for staging her own kidnap says she did it to test her sister's love for her (photo)

A 37-year-old woman, Torkwase Queen Ayakpa, who was arrested by men of the FCT police command for staging her own kidnap, says she did it to find out if her sister loves her.   Ayakpa was one of 24 suspects paraded by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command for various offenses on Wednesday, July 29.   Ayakpa, who is a hairstylist, conspired with one Fidelis Ikule, 36, to stage her kidnap. She told the police that she also did it to extort N20, 000 from her sister because her hairstyling business was no longer doing well due to the coronavirus pandemic.   Ayakpa, a native of Benue state and Fidelis, were arrested after the police traced the calls they were making for the ransom to Fidelis's house in Mashafa Village, Mpape, Abuja, where they were holing up.
