School feeding programme gulped over N500m during lockdown - Minister of humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Farouq claims

Sadiya Farouq, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (MHADMSD) has disclosed that the federal government spent about N523.3 million on school feeding programme during the lockdown against the Coronavirus pandemic.

 

The Minister disclosed this at the Presidential Taskforce briefing on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja.

 

Sadiya who disclosed that the programme was modified and implemented in three states following a March 29 Presidential directive, added that each take home ration was valued at N4,200 and this was arrived at with proper consultation. The EFCC, CCB, ICPC, DSS and some NGOs were reportedly invited to monitor the process.

 

She said; 


"It is critical at this juncture to provide details that will help puncture the tissue of lies being peddled in the public space.

"The provision of 'Take Home Rations', under the modified Home Grown School Feeding programme, was not a sole initiative of the MHADMSD.

"The ministry, in obeying the presidential directive, went into consultations with state governments through the state Governor's Forum, following which it was resolved that 'take-home rations remained the most viable option for feeding children during the lockdown.

"So, it was a joint resolution of the ministry and the state governments to give out take-home rations.

"The stakeholders also resolved that we would start with the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states, as pilot cases. 

"According to statistics from the NBS and CBN, a typical household in Nigeria has 5.6 to six members in its household, with three to four dependents.

"So, each household is assumed to have three children.

"Based on the original design of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, long before it was domiciled in the ministry, every child on the programme receives a meal a day.

"The meal costs N70 per child. When you take 20 school days per month, it means a child eats food worth N1,400 per month.

"Three children would then eat food worth N4,200 per month, and that was how we arrived at the cost of the 'take-home ration'.

"The agreement was that the federal government would provide the funding while the states would implement it.

"To ensure transparency in the process, we partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) as technical partners.

"TrackaNG monitored and gave daily updates validating the programme.

"In the FCT, 29,609 households were impacted, 37,589 homes in Lagos and 60,391 in Ogun, making a total of 124,589 families affected between May 14, and July 6.

"If 124,589 households received take-home rations valued at N4,200, the amount will be N523,273,800."

Somali regional minister shot dead by unknown gunmen

  A Somali regional minister has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the town of Jowhar, middle Shabelle region.  Abdifatah Hassan, a police official in Jowhar town, told Anadolu Agency over the phone that Hirshabelle State Agriculture Minister Abdukadir Abukar was shot dead minutes after the evening prayer on Monday, August 17.  "The gunmen attacked minister Abdukadir Abukar while he was going to his house from a nearby mosque," Hassan said, adding the attackers fled the scene. He said security forces immediately rushed to the scene after the shooting and started an investigation into the incident.  Authorities believe the al-Shabaab group is behind the attack.

Over 4,000 couples who have applied to be wedded at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry in Lagos State will have to wait for some time to put a legal seal on their union.

The PUNCH learnt that the Ministry of Interior, which runs the marriage registry, had ordered the suspension of weddings since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However,  findings by our correspondent showed that those who could wait were being given the option of “change of venue” at an extra cost of between N30,000 and N50,000. According to an applicant, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the “change of venue” option entails that the couple will name a place of their choice where the registry officials will come to conduct the wedding. The applicant said he had applied to be wedded at the registry since early June and after paying the official N33,000 and filling all the required forms, he got an email informing him that his oath taking would be on June 14, while the wedding would be June 15. The family made the announcement on Sunday, NAN reports. Ojo, 62, died after a protracted illness. He served as the Chairman, Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission between 1999 and 2003. Ojo was the Chairman, Ekiti State House of Assembly Service Commission during the first tenure of Governor Kayode Fayemi. The deceased was a member of the committee for the creation of Ekiti and member of the Ekiti Council of Elders. He was also member of the recently-dissolved 10th Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti. Dayo Oladebeye, the Rector, described Ojo as a good fellow and dedicated Ekiti man.
