One person was burnt to death and three others were injured after a petroleum tanker exploded at a filling station in Irete community along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Owerri-West Local Government Area of Imo state today, August 14.

Confirming the incident, the coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Imo state, Evans Ugoh, said after discharging its contents at the filling station, the petroleum tanker was about reversing and manoeuvring its way out of the premises when it was hit by a J5 commercial bus conveying pineapples at top speed. The bus lost control and rammed into the truck, leading to a heavy explosion.

Mr Ugoh confirmed that one of the occupants of the J5 commercial bus, a female, died on the spot while 3 other persons who sustained fatal injuries have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He said, however, officials of the IMO state fire service, Red Cross, Civil defence, the Nigerian Police and NEMA officials were all on the ground for rescue operations.

The National Judicial Council has recommended the appointment of more judges for the Supreme Court and other courts following its second virtual meeting held on August 11 and 12, 2020. Mother drowns after jumping into sea to save her son and his friend

A mother drowned in front of her son and his friend after she jumped into the sea to save them. The woman, who is in her 30s and has been named locally as Danni, went to the boys' rescue when they got into difficulty in a kayak yesterday, August 9. The body of the woman was later pulled lifeless from the water after being caught out by the strong current at Waxham beach in the Norfolk United Kingdom. Horrified onlookers tried in vain to resuscitate her before paramedics took over, but she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The sad incident happened at about 5.30pm on Sunday, while the beach was packed with people. 7 members of a family die of food poisoning in Zamfara, husband runs mad

A food poisoning incident at Auki village of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State has left 7 members of the same family, consisting of five children and two housewives, dead. It was further learnt that the husband of the late woman, Mallam Hassan lawali also developed a psychiatric disorder after eating food prepared with corn on Tuesday night. An eyewitness told Nigerian Tribune; “After they ate the food, they started to develop stomach pains, three died instantly while four people were taken to General Hospital, Bungudu where they were also pronounced dead”. While the Doctor on duty confirmed that the members of the family died of food poisoning, it was also gathered that Mallam Hassan could neither speak nor eat.

Egypt court sentences five young women to prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok

An Egyptian court has sentenced five young women to two years in prison for posting "indecent" dance videos on TikTok. The prosecution statement named two of the defendants 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old Mawada Eladhm and said the other three helped run their social media accounts. The women were also fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds (A$26,000) each for "violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family," inciting debauchery and promoting human trafficking, according to a statement from the public prosecutor. Haneen Hossam and Mawada Eladhm rose to fame though TikTok, amassing millions of followers for their video snippets which include sharing of footage of themselves wearing makeup, posing in cars, dancing in kitchens and making funny skits.
