At least 13 people are understood to be injured after a massive explosion erupted from a gas station in Russia

 

The blast happened in Volgograd city in Russia. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, a propane tank caught fire at a gas station in Volgograd’s Traktorozavodsky district.

 

Firefighters reached the site at 11.30am local time. An initial attempt to contain the fire was unsuccessful.

 

Video footage of the explosion shows a large ball of fire sent flying up into the sky and the huge flames could be seen from a distance followed by thick, black smoke.

It was first reported only four to six people were caught in the initial blast but rescuers were also injured due to several small explosions.

 

All were taken to hospital and the fire is now under control.

 

The cause of the blast is not yet clear, but local media has reported an explosion occurred in the fuel tank.

 

Eyewitnesses say the explosion shook the windows of many houses within the area.

Ten victims were taken to hospital while another two refused hospitalisation. At least one person was in critical condition.

 

One of the firefighters, an employee of the Emergencies Ministry, suffered serious burns. Local reports claim at least 50 per cent of his body burned by the time he was taken to the hospital. 

 

The explosion comes just days after more than 200 people were killed in an explosion in Beirut, Lebanon.

Police arrest men for violating COVID-19 curfew, then lock him up in a crowded cell

Taking to social media, some Nigerian man in Lagos state, lamented about their experience at the police cell. According to them, they were arrested for flouting the 10pm curfew put in place by the Federal government to curb the spread of  COVID-19  in the state. According to the men, there was heavy traffic in Lagos on Wednesday, so they couldn’t beat the curfew hour. The police officers enforcing the traffic in Ikeja arrested them and threw them in a crowded cell where none of the COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing was observed. Twitter user, Osinaike Joseph, who shared videos from the cell, alleged that the police officers refused to release some of them who were visibly sick. They accused the police of demanding bribe from them before their release. A Georgia mother and her twin sons were found dead inside a car submerged in a pond.   25-year-old ShaQuia Philpot and her 10-month-old sons, Caysen and Cassius Williams, were found after a fisherman spotted the vehicle at Mayor’s Pond in Augusta on Friday afternoon, July 24. Relatives told authorities that the family lived in Hephzibah but investigators did not disclose how the vehicle ended up in the pond in Augusta.   Their autopsies will be conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to determine an official cause of death. Over 4,000 couples who have applied to be wedded at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry in Lagos State will have to wait for some time to put a legal seal on their union.

The PUNCH learnt that the Ministry of Interior, which runs the marriage registry, had ordered the suspension of weddings since March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However,  findings by our correspondent showed that those who could wait were being given the option of “change of venue” at an extra cost of between N30,000 and N50,000. According to an applicant, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the “change of venue” option entails that the couple will name a place of their choice where the registry officials will come to conduct the wedding. The applicant said he had applied to be wedded at the registry since early June and after paying the official N33,000 and filling all the required forms, he got an email informing him that his oath taking would be on June 14, while the wedding would be June 15. At least two people were said to have lost their lives earlier this evening, along the Apapa-Oshodi expressway (directly under the pedestrian bridge in Ilasamaja, Mushin, Lagos State), when a driver lost control of his trailer as it fell and crushed a parked danfo (almost filled with passengers) beside it. Passers by were quick to help evacuate the injured n unconscious passengers from the crushed bus but as at the time of delivery long this report, two of the passengers lay mangled n stone dead on the road. Eye witnesses said the trailer driver took his heels on realizing what happened. Surprisingly, two of the passengers were said to have been rescued unhurt.
