Microsoft to buy TikTok after Trump announced he'll ban the company from operating in US

Tech giants, Microsoft have announced that they'll be buying social media app, TikTok after US President Donald Trump announced that he'll be banning the app from the United States over fears that the Chinese government uses it to spy on Americans. 

 

In a blog post, Microsoft (MSFT) said its CEO Satya Nadella has talked with Trump about buying the app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance after US policymakers have  expressed concerns about the app's ability to invade users privacy.

"[Microsoft] is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury," the company said, adding that it will "move quickly" to talk with ByteDance "in a matter of weeks."

"During this process, Microsoft looks forward to continuing dialogue with the United States Government, including with the President," the company added.

"This new structure would build on the experience TikTok users currently love, while adding world-class security, privacy, and digital safety protections," Microsoft said. "The operating model for the service would be built to ensure transparency to users as well as appropriate security oversight by governments in these countries."

 

If Microsoft does buy TikTok it could avert the ban that Trump threatened on Friday July 31. In Trump's threat, he said that he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order to block the app from operating in the United States. 

 

If the deal goes through, and Microsoft buys majority shares of the Tiktok's parent company ByteDance, Microsoft would own and operate TikTok services in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and also ensure that all private data of TikTok's American users would be transferred to and remain in the United States.

Magu Probe: Olukoyede, EFCC Secretary, Suspended

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands. Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public,  TheCable  learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters. The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC. Magu was arrested on July 6 and whisked to the presidential villa in Abuja, where he appeared before a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the operations of the EFCC under him. Contract splitting is rampant in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Niger Delta Affairs Minister Godswill Akpabio, said on Monday. According to him, the management of the agency indulges in splitting contracts to outwit the minister and evade approval. Speaking before the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta in Abuja, the minister alleged that the agency spent “over N4.2 billion in a day in tranches of N49 million.” The committee is probing how N40 billion was spent by the Interim Management Committee (IMC).
