Iya Oshogbo officially retires from acting as she turns 90

Veteran Yoruba actress Grace Oyin-Adejobi, popularly known as Iya Osogbo, will officially retire from acting when she clocks 90 on Sunday, August 23.


Iya Osogbo is the widow of the late Yoruba actor Oyin Adejobi who died in 2000.

During an appearance on a radio magazine programme on Space 90.1FM, Parrot Extra Hour on Radio, anchored by Olayinka Agboola in Ibadan, Oyo State, Iya Osogbo said she started her acting career some 67 years ago.

She noted that she had already made her name before she acted in the movie Eran Iya Osogbo contrary to beliefs.

The actress spoke for the first time about the day an excited fan nearly ran her car over her in Ibadan.

She said the experience has remained indelible in her memory.

“The fan eventually came down from her car to let me know that she merely wanted to exchange greetings with me. She later enveloped ten thousand naira and dashed me,” Iya Osogbo said.

The veteran actress expressed displeasure over the near-nudity of Nollywood today, advising actresses not to be deceived by the pleasures of the world but to believe they can succeed through hard work and the grace of God.

Iya Osogbo said she met her late husband Oyin Adejobi in her youthful days. They attended the same school and lived on the same street.

She said that apart from the death of her husband, the lowest point in her life was when her fourth child a female died.

“It took me a long time to recover from that experience,” she said.

However, her happiest moment came when she gave birth to her first child a boy in 1954.

Iya Osogbo who featured prominently in productions like Orogun Adedigba, Kuye, Kootu Ashipa and others, said there would be no formal event to mark her 90th birthday.

“I got to attain this age because of God’s mercy. In addition, the almighty also gave me the wisdom of preserving my body and being moderate in all I have been doing. Our youths should emulate this too. They should learn to be God fearing too.

“All my admirers including colleagues and family members, have agreed to postpone whatever plan they have to celebrate my 90th birthday because we must obey NCDC’s COVID-19 prevention rules,” she said.

NJC recommends 22 judges to Buhari for appointment to Supreme Court and others

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands. Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public,  TheCable  learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters. The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC. Magu was arrested on July 6 and whisked to the presidential villa in Abuja, where he appeared before a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the operations of the EFCC under him. Woman robbed of her baby and thrown into septic tank is rescued after three days

  A woman has been rescued from a septic tank three days after a man who stole her baby from her threw her in there.   The nursing mother, named Mrs Chizoba Eke was pulled alive but injured from the septic tank of an incomplete building located in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.   Her attacker, simply identified as Chinedu was apprehended when he tried to traffic her six months old baby through Omerelu, Rivers border with Imo State.   Mrs Eke, the nursing mother was kidnapped from her home with her baby on August 17, 2020, and forced into a septic tank after a severe assault by her abductor.   The husband of the victim, Mr Eke, also alleged that Chinedu had attempted to rape his wife when she was pregnant with the newborn.   Mr Eke said, “I was invited by the police to come and identify our baby, having lodged a complaint when both my wife and baby went missing. A former Kaduna Central district Senator, Shehu Sani has strongly condemned the killing of aid workers by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. DAILY POST reported that the aid workers were kidnapped by Boko Haram Terrorists on June 20th and were executed on Wednesday. In a video released by the armed group while executing the humanitarian workers, the terrorists said they executed the abducted aid workers living in their custody for a month in Borno state, having exhausted the days given for the ransom. Reacting, Shehu Sani described the execution as ‘sad and tragic.’ He, therefore, called for the protection of all aid workers in the country. “The execution of the five aid workers by the insurgents is sad and tragic.
