 Bauchi commisioner, Mohammed Sadiq resigns

Mohammed Sadiq, Bauchi State's Commissioner for Commerce and Industries, has resigned from his appointment, as confirmed in a Facebook post he shared. 

 

The commissioner said to be loyal to Yakubu Dogara, also thanked the former Speaker of the House of Representatives for making his appointment possible.

This comes amid a face-off between Dogara and the Governor of Bauchi state,  Bala Mohammed. This became visible after the lawmaker defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

  President Buhari had a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, at the statehouse, Abuja on Tuesday, August 18.   The reason for the meeting is yet to be disclosed. It is however believed it was about the ongoing mediation in the political crisis in Mali.   The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) appointed the former president to head the political reconciliation in Mali where there is leadership tussle.   See more photos below

  Gbenga Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has recounted his experience after recovering from the novel Coronavirus.   Gbenga in a post shared on social media, said himself, his wife and driver tested positive for the virus in July.   The media aide said the experience was scary for him as he had never felt that way before. He stated that his wife's situation deteriorated with time as the doctors detected underlying illnesses she had before she contracted the viral disease.   Gbenga who has since recovered and has returned to work wrote; Thank God I am back at my duty post!   Nigerians have reacted to President Buhari's media aide, Bashir Ahmad's tweet which surfaced in the wake of the death penalty handed out to a Kano singer, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu who was found guilty of committing blasphemy for a song he circulated via WhatsApp in March 2020.    Bashir Ahmad had in the tweet shared in 2015, supported the death penalty for blasphemy which he described as his "belief".    The tweet read;  I cant pretend or keep silent. I support the death penalty for BLASPHEMY. That's my belief and I do not and will never support #SaveKanoNine The tweet then led to an outcry from Nigerians who asked how he is different from Boko Haram insurgents who mete out the same treatment to those they accuse of blasphemy.  Here are some tweets below:

Facebook, Twitter delete videos of doctor making COVID-19 cure claims

Social media platforms like  Facebook  and  Twitter  as well as video streaming site, Youtube, have deleted videos by an American-based physician, Dr Stella Immanuel, who claimed to have recorded a 100 per cent success rate in the treatment of COVID-19 using hydroxychloroquine. The video was first published by Breitbart News, a right-wing medium co-founded by Steve Bannon, a former aide to American President, Donald Trump. In the video, which was shot in front of the United States Supreme Court, Dr Immanuel is seen with seven others wearing white lab coats calling themselves “America’s Frontline Doctors” and addressing the press. President Trump, who is up for reelection in November, shared multiple versions of the video with his 84 million  Twitter  followers on Monday night.   Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his wish to live above 100 years.    The 83-year-old former Nigerian leader disclosed this at an event organized to mark the one-year anniversary of the Agura of Gbagura, Oba Sabur Bakare, Jamolu II.   Obasanjo advised the monarch to propagate unity among traditional rules in Yorubaland while speaking at the interdenominational service. “I will be here to celebrate your 20 years anniversary with you whether I am invited or not. “By the time I also partake in celebrating your 20th anniversary with you, if God wishes, He can call me to come and meet Him in heaven because I know by that time, I will be above 100 or more . Concert: Naira Marley arraigned before Abuja Mobile Court, fined N200,000 (photos/video)

  Singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, was this morning August 7, arraigned before an Abuja mobile court for violating COVID-19 protocols.    The FCT Administration filed a four-count charge against him for hosting a concert at Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja, in clear violation of COVID-19 directives on June 13, flouting the presidential ban on interstate travel and public gatherings.   After the charges were read to him, Naira Marley pleaded guilty and presiding magistrate Idayat Akanni handed down a fine of N200, 000 on him. Nigeria added to Wikipedia's list of failed states

  Wikipedia's list of failed states has been updated and Nigeria is now one of the countries on the list.    The free web-based encyclopedia project, which contains information on a wide variety of subjects, described a failed state as a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.   It further added that a state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Hushpuppi not released yet, says US lawyer

Gal Pissetzky, the legal representative of suspected Internet fraudster, Ramon Abass, aka Hushpuppi, has said the suspect is on his way to California, United States of America, for trial. He told The PUNCH on Wednesday night that Hushpuppi had not been released as being speculated in some quarters. Pissetzky, a Chicago lawyer, also noted that he was still his lawyer. “He has not been released and I am still his lawyer. He is on his way to California. Not everything you see on court documents is accurate. “Just because the jail record says ‘released’ does not mean he has been released. He is being transferred to California,” he told the PUNCH correspondent on the phone. Hushpuppi is facing trial for alleged Internet fraud.

Bristow Helicopters sacks 100 pilots and engineers

Bristow Helicopters publicize the sack of over 100 pilots and engineers in its employ. In a statement released on Tuesday, August 4, the company said the workers laid off due to the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic on its operations.
