13-YEAR-OLD BOY IMPRISONED FOR BLASPHEMY IN KANO

Umar Farouq in Kano, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for blasphemy, got the attention of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. 

The agency condemned the judgment passed by the Upper Sharia Court in Kano State. 

Umar Farouq was arrested after he allegedly made derogatory statements towards Allah during an argument with a friend.

The same judge, Aliyu Kanu, sentenced musician Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death for blaspheming Prophet Mohammed.

USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan federal government entity established by the U.S. Congress to monitor, analyze and report threats to religious freedom abroad, in reaction to the judgement, the US commission condemned the death sentence handed to Sharif-Aminu for allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammed. 

USCIRF Commissioner Frederick Davies, Stated. 

“It is unconscionable that Sharif-Aminu is facing a death sentence merely for expressing his beliefs artistically through music. The US Senate should work swiftly to pass Resolution 458, which calls for the global repeal of heresy, blasphemy, and apostasy laws.”




Meanwhile, the National Coordinator, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the judgment did not conform with human rights conventions and treaties to which Nigeria was a signatory.

The Convener, Coalition for Defence of Democracy and the Constitution, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, also says

“What is coming out of Kano is a challenge to section 10 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. We know that the current Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, is more or less not interested in the secularity of this country.

“What is going on in Kano is an attempt to restructure Nigeria through the back door to create a two-nation in one because the message they are sending to the international community is that there is a part of the country operating a different legal system.”

Magu Probe: Olukoyede, EFCC Secretary, Suspended

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands. Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public,  TheCable  learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters. The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC. Magu was arrested on July 6 and whisked to the presidential villa in Abuja, where he appeared before a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the operations of the EFCC under him. The panel is headed by Ayo Salami, retired president of the appeal court. Demitra “Mimi” Roche, who appeared on the Oxygen reality show “Bad Girls Club,” has passed away at the age of 34. Record producer and founder of Valholla Entertainment in Miami, where Roche had worked as vice president of A&R since 2011, announced her death via Twitter. “I’m at a loss for words.
