Magu Probe: Olukoyede, EFCC Secretary, Suspended

Some officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have received letters of suspension, TheCable understands.

Although details of those suspended are yet to be made public, TheCable learnt that Olanipekun Olukoyede, secretary to the commission, is among those who received the letters.

The development is not unconnected to the ongoing probe of Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the EFCC.

Magu was arrested on July 6 and whisked to the presidential villa in Abuja, where he appeared before a panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the operations of the EFCC under him.

The panel is headed by Ayo Salami, retired president of the appeal court.

On July 14, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), sent a letter to Mohammed Umar, acting EFCC chairman, notifying him of the suspension of 12 directors in the commission.

TheCable understands that some of the directors affected by the action have been involved in investigating Malami.

Magu through his lawyer Wahab Shittu has issued a statement thanking the probe panel for facilitating his release from custody.

“Our client wishes to place on record his appreciation to the chairman and members of the panel for ordering his release from custody on the 15th day of July 2020 without any conditionalities,” Shittu said.

“Our client appreciates this gesture given the fact that the panel has repeatedly stated that it did not order the detention of our client in the first place. Our client is grateful to the panel for the gesture.


Shittu also drew the panel’s attention to media reports which he claims are false and prejudicial to the proceedings of the panel.


“We state for the records that we are not in a position to query the honourable panel and certainly will never set out doing so,” he said

“Rather our intention was to draw the attention of the honourable panel to persistent falsehood publications concerning our client being orchestrated consistently in the public space in a manner that could prejudice the proceedings of this honourable panel.

“We apologize if any contrary interpretation of our intention is conveyed by the context in which the questions were raised in the referred letter. We hold the panel in the highest esteem.

He gave assurance that Magu has undertaken to offer his full cooperation with the panel in the discharge of its assignment.

Woman robbed of her baby and thrown into septic tank is rescued after three days

  A woman has been rescued from a septic tank three days after a man who stole her baby from her threw her in there.   The nursing mother, named Mrs Chizoba Eke was pulled alive but injured from the septic tank of an incomplete building located in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.   Her attacker, simply identified as Chinedu was apprehended when he tried to traffic her six months old baby through Omerelu, Rivers border with Imo State.   Mrs Eke, the nursing mother was kidnapped from her home with her baby on August 17, 2020, and forced into a septic tank after a severe assault by her abductor.   The husband of the victim, Mr Eke, also alleged that Chinedu had attempted to rape his wife when she was pregnant with the newborn.   Mr Eke said, “I was invited by the police to come and identify our baby, having lodged a complaint when both my wife and baby went missing.   Police officers are on the lookout for anyone with information about a set of goats that 'hijacked a police car in broad daylight'.   In the words of the Isle of White, UK police officers, they are in the hunt for some badly behaved 'kids' who damaged their vehicle and are appealing for witnesses.   According to police, the goats were pictured standing on top the police vehicle near Newport on Wednesday afternoon August 19, as Police had been called to the area after an unexploded bomb from World War II was discovered.    The police called the Royal Navy Explosives Team, travelled from Portsmouth to help destroy the unexploded bomb.     The officers, after detonating the bomb, then returned to their car only to find their car damaged by the 'hooligans'.     The police are now asking if anyone can recognize the goats from the picture.    A police statement published on the police department's official Facebook page said: ‘In a...

UK high commission to replace expired visa for free for Nigerians as it restarts operations

Lady arrested for staging her own kidnap says she did it to test her sister's love for her (photo)

A 37-year-old woman, Torkwase Queen Ayakpa, who was arrested by men of the FCT police command for staging her own kidnap, says she did it to find out if her sister loves her.   Ayakpa was one of 24 suspects paraded by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command for various offenses on Wednesday, July 29.   Ayakpa, who is a hairstylist, conspired with one Fidelis Ikule, 36, to stage her kidnap. She told the police that she also did it to extort N20, 000 from her sister because her hairstyling business was no longer doing well due to the coronavirus pandemic.   Ayakpa, a native of Benue state and Fidelis, were arrested after the police traced the calls they were making for the ransom to Fidelis's house in Mashafa Village, Mpape, Abuja, where they were holing up.
